Your Prefrontal Cortex is responsible for, in part, your attention span, perseverance, judgement, impulse control, your ability to be organized and problem solving. The prefrontal cortex supervises time management, judgment, impulse control, planning, organization and critical thinking. Your ability to think ahead and be successful depends on the health of your Prefrontal Cortex. When your Prefrontal Cortex is not operating at its peak you become easily distracted. This is when you struggle to maintain your mental energy level.

Often when people have Prefrontal Cortex challenges they become more prone to conflict. They use conflict as a way to create activity in the Prefrontal Cortex. This behavior has many negative side effects, especially in the workplace and your immune system. Focusing on what you like about your life and what you like about others is a way to keep your Prefrontal Cortex healthy.

A good solution is the weekly review process. Once a week sit down and write down three things you like best about your week. The three things that you feel good about. Then write one thing that you would like to improve upon next week. Please pay special attention to the wording, three things you like best about your performance over this past week and the one thing you want to focus on for next week. This is critical to your success and your Prefrontal Cortex health.

Every week you should review yourself by writing down three things you like best about your performance and the one thing you want to do better next week. Have a negative, complainer on your team? Require them to do the same thing. It will be tough for them, so you will need to stand your ground and focus on the three items they like best at least 75% of the time in your coaching conversations with them.

Experiential Leadership


Experiential learning may be the key to successful leaders becoming more than they have been.  When a leader learns from their experiences, their skills will snowball.  With diligent study and experiential learning, the future can be very bright for leaders across the Earth.

Harvard Business Review reports, more than $24 billion is spent annually on leadership development. Without implementing experiential learning in the process, many leaders will have a difficult time employing their new skills. Leaders are not able to create the new habits necessary to gain mastery.

A leader may have years of experience this does not create them automatically better. Experienced leaders often fall into a trance of day to day operation, just getting through the day.  Learning more is not the norm.

What is your mindset today? When a leader demonstrates a growth mindset, they will work through the learning process. Learning what they need to know while using their experience to enhance the new information.

The first step to success is discovering what it is that they need to know.  This might be a goal of learning communication skills, increasing EQ, or seeing how to handle difficult employee.  A leader with the learning mindset will look for or create new projects, and the classroom will be a space to review, role play, and talk about the consequences.

Utilizing the new learning in the current culture by creating learning lab. A leader interested in improving their ability to persuade, for example, would note the difference when they sit in different areas of a room as well as different body postures they may try.  The careful notation about the results is key.

The concluding step is for a leader to document, document, document their outcomes.  This documentation should show the difference over a previous period.  This could be weekly, monthly, or quarterly. Leaders should be able to honestly reflect on their performance.  This honest reflection must include the positive effects.  Seventy percent of your review should be positive, build on your strengths.

Leaders with the learning mindset will protect the company from legal entanglements, high turnover, poor morale and poor production or client serving.  The bottom line, the organizations will create a more profitable environment for all.

What Happened When I Replied “Call Me” To Every Email I Got For A Week

After forcing himself to become more “phone-prone,” this CEO finds that empathy sometimes equals efficiency.

The sound of descending chimes. Funky MIDI elevator music. Ughhhhhh–why is my phone ringing? Can’t they just text!?

Like many people, the phone is a tool of last resort. I’d rather text or Slack or email or carrier pigeon. But I’ve noticed that many of the most successful, productive people I’ve met are what you might call “phone-prone.” If you send them a text, they call you instead of texting back. Email them? Get a call back.

Maybe this wasn’t a coincidence. I decided it was time to test my beliefs. But first, I decided to email two “phone-prone” people–Krista Smith, the West Coast editor of Vanity Fair, and Eric Kuhn, a former L.A. talent agent and a cofounder of Layer3 TV–for some advice. Within minutes I got an email back, “Call me.”

“I think it’s about intonation, and that so much is confused in an email about what someone’s implying,” Smith pointed out, a factor that both agreed helps generate empathy. Kuhn told me, “It’s a much more real and civilized conversation on the phone, because you’re able to express emotion and hear the person’s voice and understand what’s happening.” Fair enough, but both Smith and Kuhn assured me that these more human interactions would also make things faster.

So at their encouraging, I devised a really simple plan: First, whenever someone emailed or texted me, I would suggest we jump on a call. Second, I kept a running “call list” of all the people I’d need to get in touch with over the course of my workweek. Whenever I had a free minute, I’d call the next person on it. Here’s how things went.

The Upsides

In that week, I had fulfilling conversations that wouldn’t have been possible through typing alone. I helped one of my customers solve a thorny issue and ended up reassuring him about some of his career worries. I’d never have heard the stress in his voice by emailing. In another case, I caught up with a CEO friend, and after answering her main question, we went back and forth on other things, including a thoughtful conversation about her business model.

What I found was that particularly for more nuanced discussions, the phone saved me time because neither of us had to be overly verbose to give context. Simply hearing somebody’s tone, as Smith had pointed out, made it easier to understand where someone stood and react accordingly. Quicker access to empathy really did lead to more efficiency.

The Downsides

There were obvious drawbacks, too, though. In addition to having to use actual emotions instead of emojis, I would often miss people when I tried to reach them. Phone-tag time can add up–but then again, you have to wait for the other person to respond in any form asynchronous communication. In fact, I found that I would often get calls back sooner than responses to emails. I think this is partly just because we’re all deluged in emails, but non-spam phone calls are increasingly rare. So the less people use the phone for ordinary work-related conversations, the more useful it may even become.

So while I placed more calls over the course of the week than actually led to live phone conversations, the dozen or so that I did have not only saved me time but also gave me a better sense of purpose and humanity. That doesn’t sound like a productivity booster, but in retrospect it was: I was able to help people–more often and more quickly–in a way I couldn’t through sterile emails. And in the cases of talking to customers, calling helped me build better relationships for my business.

What I’m Sticking With

My call list isn’t going anywhere. I’ve been able to turn walks to work and Ubers to meetings into productive time. This had a secondary benefit that my future self will be grateful for: I was no longer looking down at my phone, straining my neck.

In fact, I’ve now absorbed my call list into my to-do list. Alongside reminders to send out proposals and organize internal meetings, I have notes on whom to call, what the call is about, and how we got connected in the first place: “Call Jim about career advice, introduced via LinkedIn.” This helps me break out of just defaulting to email, and remember all the other modes of communication I might be forgetting.

The phone may not be the newest collaboration tool out there, but I was surprised at how effective I found it after a week of forcing myself to become more “phone-prone.” Sure, I couldn’t express myself using virtual smiley faces that way, but I was able to be more authentic–which doesn’t just lead to better relationships, but can help you tap into them more productively, too.

161.7 Billion dollars was spent last year on employee training and education, but most companies are not happy with their ROI. Their people return to their daily routine raving about how great the training was, but within a few weeks or months, everyone has returned to their behavior of old. Leadership should change the way they think about their training efforts. Context is crucial, skill and techniques are crucial, the culture of the organization and management processes are crucial and must be considered first when organizing training.
What are the key reasons for failure?
(1) Unclear direction on strategy and values, which often leads to conflicting priorities;
(2) Senior executives who don’t work as a team and haven’t committed to a new direction or acknowledged necessary changes in their behavior;
(3) A top-down or laissez-faire style of the leader, which prevents an honest conversation about problems;
(4) A lack of coordination across businesses, functions, or regions due to poor organizational design;
(5) Inadequate leadership time and attention given to talent issues; and
(6) Employees’ fears by telling the senior team about obstacles to the organization’s effectiveness

These six-common managerial and organizational barriers prevented people from applying what they’ve learned, no matter how smart and motivated they are. Thus, the learning does not create better organizational performance because people soon revert to their old ways of doing things.

What is having an even larger impact than the previous mention six items is the mere fact that the person doing the training does not understand the culture of the company. They do not spend the time to learn about the company and its culture.

Consider a medium sized manufacturing company in Northern California. After investing in an off the shelf training program, from one of the Nation’s largest training companies sold to them as a method to improve leadership and organizational effectiveness. The results six weeks later were disappointing. For an entire training day, the team fully engaged and walked away with excitement and a game plan for success. Participants described the program as very powerful, useful and motivational. They participated in numerous tasks that required teamwork, and they received real-time feedback on both individual and group behavior. The program ended with a written 30-day action plan for taking the learning back and making a difference. Surveys suggested that participants’ attitudes had significantly improved. However, only a tiny percentage of the participants attempted to follow through with the 30-day action plan. A few weeks later they found it impossible to apply what they had learned about teamwork and collaboration because the trainer did not understand the culture of the company or even discussed during the workshop. The Leadership Team feels better about the direction that the manager and supervisor of have started down, but also feel that they could have been and should be better for the investment of over $4000.

This type of out of the box training does not work. It seldom will for any organization hoping for long term results. Leaders of the various group often share that the culture in which they work makes it difficult for their teams to put the learning to work on a consistent basis after the training.

Many companies pour money into training with high hopes of seeing an ROI that will justify the cost.

But what is needed is a different way of thinking about learning and development. Leadership must do their part to avoid the six pitfalls listed above but also must be willing to help bring the culture of their company into the training room.

Customized training becomes a must. The Leadership of a company should take an active role in the design of the curriculum for each training day. The leadership should help set the framework for a successful training environment. What are your current management practices when it comes to HR issues, documentation of employee behavior, documentation of discipline problems, the process of hiring employees? These processes and more should play a role in the training day or week. What is most important to your team.

Additionally, a follow-up system must be in place. With additional skills being taught and open time for frank discussion about what is working and what is not. A follow up system could last for up to a year for continued team growth and development.

Ohio State leadership seminal studies found that one program had succeeded in changing frontline supervisors’ attitudes about how they should manage, but a follow-up study revealed that most supervisors had then regressed to their pre-training views. The only exceptions were those whose leaders practiced and believed in the leadership style the program was designed to teach. A structured follow-up system also created the success of these programs

A poor return on investment isn’t the only adverse outcome of failed training program. An atmosphere of distrust between the employee and leadership occurs.

Some leaders may fool themselves into believing that they are implementing real change through corporate education, but others in the organization know better. Leadership is soon asking why don’t my leaders get this? Why are they not applying what they learned?

Creating an ROI that Leadership can point to as a success by creating a long term lasting change is not only the duties of the company but mainly falls on the shoulders of the training organization selected to make a difference.

Will the training company survey and evaluate the Leadership’s needs?

Will the training organization create material for each company they work with? Or like so many, are the just repurposing the same material time after time?

Will the trainer spend time at the site with the participants before the workshop, to gain a better understanding of the culture? Or do they just arrive the day of and leave that evening?

Is there a solid plan in place to create follow-up procedures for the participants? A plan that will require the participants to continue to learn and grow for six months or up to a year.

Will the training company require the following?

The leadership of a company defines values and direction for their leaders.

The collecting of candid (anonymous) findings and insights

Allow accountability for continued learning for up to one year.
A successful training program revealed significant behavioral changes in the team. With a solid strategy for class room work and follow up work the execution of leadership skills improved rapidly. It was estimated by the CEO a tenfold return was taking place in a few short weeks.

The early birds will inherit the earth.

At least that’s what a 2009 University of Leipzig study found. The researchers concluded that “morning people were more proactive than evening types.”

But being an effective early riser isn’t just about waking up before everyone else. It’s about putting yourself in a positive mindset and getting important things done before everyone else.

So there’s no point in setting your alarm clock at a crazy-early time if you’re just going to zone out in front of the television for a bit before slouching off to work.

To start your day right, you’ve got to get into some good habits.

Following are seven-morning rituals that may seem hard to adopt but will ultimately reap major rewards, if you stick with them.

Make a plan the night before

This isn’t a morning ritual per se, but it’s a habit that’s definitely conducive to a productive morning routine. So make sure to set yourself up for a successful morning by creating a game plan the night before.

It’s always helpful to have everything you need for the day laid out and ready to go when you wake up. Make sure you’re stocked on whatever you need for breakfast. Write out a little schedule on what you need to accomplish the next day.

This all sounds pretty simple, but when you’re getting home at night, it’s very tempting to just crash on the sofa with a glass of wine and leave all the thinking for tomorrow.

Wake up painfully early

Sorry, night owls. It’s time to adapt.

In a poll of 20 executives cited by Laura Vanderkam, a time-management expert and the author of “What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast,” 90% said they wake up before 6 a.m. on weekdays. PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, for example, wakes at 4 and is in the office no later than 7. Disney CEO Bob Iger gets up at 4:30 to read. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is up at 5:30 to go jogging.

Yes, this might sound awful, but if you get to sleep earlier, that’ll numb the pain of such early wake-ups over time. The bottom line: Productive mornings start with early wake-up calls.

Start the day right with exercise

Yeah, there are super humans among us who crave that pre-sunrise workout (that, or they’re just really good liars). Still, for everyone else, waking up at the crack of dawn to sweat and get sore probably doesn’t sound ideal.

But the morning is probably the ideal time to exercise. By starting your day with exercise, you’ll prevent yourself from putting it off.

Think about it this way: If some of the busiest people in the world can find time to workout, so can you. For example, Vanderkam notes that Xerox CEO Ursula Burns schedules an hourlong personal-training session at 6 a.m. twice a week.

US President Barack Obama starts out each day with strength and cardio training while Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey does three repetitions of a seven-minute workout, Anisa Purbasari reported for Business Insider.

“These are incredibly busy people,” says Vanderkam. “If they make time to exercise, it must be important.”

Tackle your high-priority projects

The quiet hours of the morning can be the ideal time to focus on an important work project without being interrupted. What’s more, spending time on it at the beginning of the day ensures that it gets your attention before others — kids, employees, bosses — use it up.

Vanderkam uses the example of a business strategist who dealt with so many ad hoc meetings and interruptions throughout the day that she felt she couldn’t get anything done. She started thinking of the early mornings as project time, and chose a top-priority project each day to focus on. Sure enough, not a single colleague dropped in on her at 6:30 a.m. She could finally concentrate.

Work on your side hustle

Your side project is easy to skip when you’ve been in meetings all day, are tired and hungry, and have to figure out what’s for dinner. That’s why many successful people put in an hour or so on their personal projects before they officially start their days.

A history teacher at the University of Chicago told Vanderkam that she spent the hours between 6 and 9 working on a book about the religious politics of West Africa. She was able to read journal articles and write several pages before dealing with her teaching responsibilities.

By carving out the time in the morning to write, and making it a habit, she could follow through.

She’s not in bad company. According to the Telegraph, Ludwig Beethoven, John Milton, Kurt Vonnegut, Maya Angelou, and Victor Hugo all tackled their creative projects in the morning.

Have sex — or just talk to your partner

In the evening, it’s more likely you’ll be tired from the day’s activities. That’s why many successful people make connecting with their partners a morning ritual.

Besides, Vanderkam wonders, what could be better than predawn sex to energize you for the day? After all, regular sex may make you smarter, boost your income, and burn calories.

Even if they’re not getting frisky every morning, many couples use the early hours to talk. For instance, she notes that a BlackRock executive and his wife commute from the suburbs into New York City every morning. They spend the hour-plus trip discussing their lives, finances, household to-do lists, and plans for the week.

Enjoy the silence

Life can get crazy. It’s often hard to find any moments to spare in your busy schedule. If you’re always rushing around in the morning, it’s difficult to imagine being able to spare any time to have a quiet moment.

But practicing mindfulness isn’t a waste of time. Try to reserve a few minutes for silent contemplation at the start of every day. You can use those peaceful moments to meditate, envision your future success, pray, or reflect on what you’re grateful for — whatever works for you. That short pause can put you in a great mindset for the rest of the day.
