Oracle’s $638B RPO Rerates the Cloud Multiple Toward a Hardware Pass-Through

Oracle's Q4 8-K discloses $75 billion of its record $638 billion backlog is prepaid or customer-supplied GPUs, reframing the OCI growth story as capital-intensive hardware logistics rather than software-margin cloud.

Oracle’s record backlog is being built on customer-financed silicon, not Oracle software margin. The Q4 FY2026 8-K filed June 10 reports remaining performance obligations of $638 billion, up 363 percent year over year and up $85 billion sequentially, and states that most of the Q3 and Q4 increase came from large-scale AI contracts where the customer prepaid for GPUs or supplied the GPUs directly to Oracle. The prepaid and customer-supplied hardware portion of those contracts now totals $75 billion, a disclosure that sits in an institutional filing rather than a slide, which is what gives it weight.

Why It Matters

The composition of that RPO changes what multiple the backlog deserves. Cloud infrastructure revenue grew 93 percent in the quarter to $5.8 billion, and the market is pricing Oracle as a hyperscaler converging on AWS and Azure economics. The filing complicates that read. A backlog dominated by GPU prepayment and customer-consigned hardware carries pass-through economics closer to a colocation and systems-integration business than to the 70-plus-point gross margins of Oracle’s database franchise. The same filing shows FY2026 free cash flow of negative $23.7 billion on $55.7 billion of capital expenditure, with total borrowings now above $129 billion against $43 billion of stockholders’ equity. The backlog is real and contracted. The question the disclosure forces is whether OCI’s incremental dollar converts at software margin or at infrastructure margin, because the valuation depends entirely on which.

Oracle is exposed on the gap between how its RPO is priced and how it will convert. The mechanism is multiple compression: if sell-side models begin separating software-margin cloud from hardware pass-through backlog, the blended forward multiple on the $638 billion compresses toward an infrastructure comp set even as reported revenue keeps growing. The trigger window is the next two earnings cycles, when Q1 and Q2 FY2027 cloud gross margin either holds near database-franchise levels or drifts toward systems-integration economics as the GPU-heavy contracts begin revenue recognition. The responsible defense is to disclose OCI gross margin separately from total cloud and software on the next earnings call, before the sell-side imposes its own segmentation and the company loses control of the framing.

Offensive Advantage

The pure-play hyperscalers with internally funded silicon are positioned to press the margin contrast. Microsoft and Alphabet fund their own accelerators and depreciate them on balance sheet rather than recognizing customer-supplied GPUs as pass-through, which lets them present AI cloud growth at infrastructure margins they control end to end. The mechanism is a clean comparison: against a competitor now carrying negative free cash flow and customer-consigned hardware in backlog, they can credential their own AI cloud as both faster-converting and self-funded. The window is the same two FY2027 quarters. The responsible move is for those operators to lead their next prints with AI-cloud gross margin and free cash flow per dollar of capex, the two metrics where Oracle’s own filing now hands them the contrast.

Expect the Oracle story to bifurcate over the next 30 to 90 days between revenue-growth bulls citing the 93 percent OCI number and margin skeptics citing the $75 billion hardware disclosure and the negative free cash flow. Confirmation will surface in three places: whether analysts begin modeling OCI gross margin as a separate line, whether Oracle volunteers that segmentation first, and whether the FY2027 capital plan of roughly $40 billion in new debt and equity holds or expands. If Q1 and Q2 FY2027 cloud gross margin prints at or above prior database-franchise levels and free cash flow inflects back toward positive, the pass-through concern is wrong and the hyperscaler rerating is justified. That margin and cash-flow recovery is the falsification test. Absent it, the backlog is large, contracted, and lower-margin than the current multiple assumes.
